Law Would Toughen Rules on Checking ID to Prevent Crime

ID Checks to Fight Crime

Introduced Jun 16, 2022·Last discussed Mar 22, 2023
Summary

This proposed law wanted to change the rules about asking for ID. It would have made it illegal for someone to demand to see your ID simply because of your race. This means a store owner couldn't ask a Black person for ID just because they are Black. It would have applied to everyone in Canada. This proposed law would have affected both people who are asked for ID and people who ask for ID. If you are a visible minority, you might have felt safer knowing you couldn't be unfairly targeted. If you are a business owner or security guard, you would have needed to be very careful about why you were asking for ID. This proposed law was important because it tried to stop racial profiling. Racial profiling is when people are treated differently because of their race. Some people believe it is unfair and discriminatory. However, this proposed law did not pass, so the rules about asking for ID remain the same.
