Before his appointment to the Senate, Tony Dean had a long career in public service. He is best known for his role as Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Ontario Public Service from 2002 to 2008. In this position, he was the top civil servant in the province, providing advice to the Premier and cabinet. After leaving the government, Dean became a professor at the University of Toronto's School of Public Policy and Governance. He also served as a special advisor to the provincial government on various policy issues, including a 2015 report on the Ontario College of Trades.
